The Pre-historic Section is located in the historic “Palazzo Vescovile” (Bishop’s Palace) constructed in the XVIII century partly on the ruins of the Norman monastery of the XII century, and is contained in exhibition rooms (Rooms: I-X), on two levels of the building.
The section begins on the First Floor (Rooms: I-VI) with an ample representation of sample materials from the evolution of the cultures that followed each other on the island of Lipari during the Mid Neolithic Age(last centuries V millenium B.C.) and of the Final Neolithic; the Aeneolithic Age (III millenim B.C.); and the Bronze Age (II millenium-beginning IX century B.C.). The finds come from archeological excavations conducted on the rock of the "Castello" (Castle) and on the plain below the Contrada Diana.
The section ends on the Ground Floor (Rooms: VII - X) with an exhibition of material going back to the foundation of Lipàra (580 - 576 B.C.) where colonies from the island of Cnido settled. Particularly interesting, in this sense, are the votive offerings, dating between the VI and V century B.C. (Fig.1), found in a pit, bothros,(Fig.2) dedicated to Aeolus, whose opening was closed by a cover made of lavic rock upon which is the statue of a lion lying down (Fig.3).
